Tony Packo's

If you remember the TV series MASH you may recall that Corporal Klinger was portrayed as coming from Toledo Ohio. In several of the episodes he talks about the good food to be found at a Toledo institution known as Tony Packo's.

Turns out Tony Packo's is a real place and is indeed well known for their food.  It is just down the road from the Maritime Museum.

We enjoyed the Tony Packo feast which includes chili, a cabbage roll and frankfurter. It was memorable...

Colorado Images

Our trip to Ouray had a few more sets of images on a variety of topics...

Julie seems to draw dogs to her and a trip to Ouray was no exception

The dog was walking its master thru the park and jumped into Julie's lap for some attention

The Ouray toy store has an area where they demonstrate games. We found several logic games that were a lot of fun

The games were hits for all ages
The Ouray brewery serves food on the open air top deck. We had dinner there.

Great view of the town

Ice cream after dinner is a family tradition in Ouray

National Museum of the Great Lakes

A wonderful museum telling the history of the Great Lakes and shipping over the ages is located in Toledo Ohio.

Wonderful exhibits tell the stories of ships (called "boats" when on the the Great Lakes), ship wrecks, technology, communication and economies of the cities and lakes.

Also on display is a Great Lakes ore carrier which allows you to explore the entire boat on a self guided tour.

Well done displays educate about all aspects of the Great Lakes

Models of the history of ships on the lakes are on display

Lighthouses are covered as well as light ships that were permanently anchored and served as marker beacons

This nearly 100 year old ship just came out of a well done complete exterior restoration

This was a trend setting example of style of the period

Canals

Outside of Grand Rapids, Ohio is a very nice park that preserves a part of the canal used to move freight around Ohio. The park contains a water powered mill that also generated electricity for the area for years and was the local sawmill.

There is a canal boat that is towed down the canal by mules and travels thru the the lock

There is a well done model of the lock and canal boat on display

Operating mill and saw mill

Both flour and corn are ground in the mill using a process that retains all of the nutrients

We obtained a variety of freshly ground grains from the mill...

Frank Lloyd Wright in Kankakee Illinois

We had the opportunity to visit a Frank Lloyd Wright home in Kankakee, Illinois. This was the first home of what came to be known as his Prairie Style architecture.

The home is known as the Bradley House and is open for tours.

The art glass windows in this house incorporate a tulip motif and are striking

This view shows how the home is "planted" using shapes to blend the home into the ground and tapers to the walls mimicking the taper of a tree. I can only imagine the construction issues caused by this taper to the walls.
