Museum of Science and Industry

We enjoyed a day at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry and a two hour long special tour of the U505 German WWII Type IX submarine

The sub display takes you thru a series of images and models of ships being attacked by submarines

Our docent told the story of  U505 and its eventual capture by the US Navy on the high seas

The submarine is on display in an area that gives the impression of a WWII bunker

The sailors that boarded and captured the sub are highlighted and their stories told.

Forward torpedo room

This is the open sea strainer that was flooding the sub when found and closed by the US Navy

Engine room

Electric engine control

The sensitive data found on the captured sub reqired utmost secrecy from all involved. They kept it quiet!

This is a photo taken thru the periscope used for sighting aircraft

Getting the submarine from Bermuda to Chicago and onto the grounds of the museum was a subject all to itself.

Models of the ships involved in the capture

Other highlights of the museum included Colleen Moore's Fairy Castle

Bicycle history was nicely covered

The ship model museum was full of very nicely detailed models

The display dealing with patterns was a highlight of the day

The creation of patterns was best shown by the use of reflective mirrors in a maze

A very large model railroad covers a significant part of one museum wing

Aircraft in a bombing run

Enjoying a classic steam engine on the way out of the museum

  1. The mirror maze looked very cool. What an extensive variety of exhibits. I bet the kids would enjoy that place.
