CR14 and theBrooklyn Mine

We were on Red Mountain Pass searching for a road leading to a mining complex visible from Highway 550. We turned off near the top of the pass and ended up on CR14. This turned out not to be the road down to the mine head frame, but rather a trip up and over a mountain, well above the highway. Views were breathtaking.

It comes down into the Brooklyn Mine complex which was fun to explore.
This image was taken at highway level on the road between Ouray and Silverton

Our Jeep has the all important "Trail Rated" badge which means we have a low range transmission and skid plates, both of which are needed for this trip

This is a view of the same stretch of highway shown above from the Jeep trail

Remains of a cabin

The Brooklyn mine complex

This appeared to be someones "Tiny House"

A loft, many shelves and a nicely planked interior show some care at one point in time

View from the deck

Even has a driveway

Lots of debris around

Kinda gives the feel of a Jeep advertisement

Mine entrance

These buildings were  for mine workers at the Idarado mine complex on Red Mountain and are found by the viewing turnoff near the top of Red Mountain pass

Some are still intact, but most are falling victim to the winter snows

  1. Really beautiful! So do they let the houses fall into disrepair or do they try to keep them standing? I saw and electrical box, is there still electricity up there?
