The Charleston Navy Yard in Boston Massachusetts is the home of a WWII Fletcher class destroyer, the 'Cassin Young'. It has been restored to it's WW II configuration and is operated by the National Parks Department.
I've wanted to see this class of ship due to my interest in the famous WWII Battle of Samar and the heroic actions of the Fletcher class destroyer 'Johnston' and her Captain Evans.
More about the Battle of Samar can be found at this link:

Standing above this open hatch is the outcome of asking the National Parks docent where Captain Evans was standing on the Johnston after his ship was mostly destroyed and he was standing on the stern and giving commands for manual steering down a hatch to the aft steering room. The Park Service folks took Julie and me to the hatch in question and unlocked it for me to see where he stood in the last minutes as his ship sailed into Navy history. |

This is the ammunition loading area just underneath the 5" gun. The powder for the charge is found in the lower right of this image. The shell was stored elsewhere in the area. These were brought up from the storage magazine located below this area by a small elevator of sorts |
