Jewel Box Bank in Grinnell Iowa

Louis Sullivan was a Chicago based architect who, in his later years, became widely known for his small town bank architecture. Most of his small bank design efforts still exist and are on the National Historic Landmark list.

One is located in Grinnell, Iowa. We made a point to swing by the town and check out his work.

You can compare this one to another example we found in Owatonna, Minnesota using this link: Louis Sullivan Jewel Box Bank in Minnesota

We found a charging station within walking distance of the bank which was a nice bonus...

The attention to detail carries thru the check writing stand in the bank lobby

Louis Sullivan Bank

Louis Sullivan was a famous architect well known for his office building and skyscraper designs. He also designed banks for small towns when he had a client who wanted something a bit special. This bank is considered the finest small town bank ever designed. It was completed in 1908.

Louis Sullivan would be surprised, and I hope pleased, to find people are travelling long distances to see his Jewel Box banks. The architecture of the buildings has endured and left a legacy of his design talents.

We visited the one in Owatonna, Minnesota. The current owners realize the architectural jewel they have and encourage your exploration of the building.
