Wooden Boats

We traveled to Brooklin, Maine to see the Wooden Boat facility. They are known for their 'Wooden Boat' publication, a magazine that keeps the art of wooden boat building alive.

It turns out there is a whole lot more here than just the magazine publisher and a very nice book store. They offer a school that teaches the art of wooden boat building as well as a fleet of various sized wooden boats that are used for sailing training.  We especially enjoyed our stop here.

Lots more can be found at their website:

This is the Wooden Boat store which offers a great selection of books on boat building

The good folks in the book store invited us to explore the grounds and stick our heads in the boat building classes, but not disturb the students.

On our way to the boat building school.

Several boats were outside the school

A small pram

I thought this was a a beautiful boat, almost too nice to cover the fine wood work with paint

We enjoyed looking in the various boat building classrooms

Students have a variety of places they can stay. This building  located next to the school is one of the choices.

Some boats appear to have been in storage for a long time

This boat was in for repair

The upper portion was replaced on this one

This is the road to the harbor. A picnic shelter is located along the way.

There were some very beautiful boats stored in the shelter

Some of the wood joints on the boats were very intricate
