We visited the Erie Maritime Museum on the morning of September 11, 2018 and witnessed the Memorial for the 9-11 victims. It was very sobering.
The museum is a well done history of the War of 1812 on the Great Lakes and the ships that fought in the battle. As luck woud have it the brig 'Niagra" was in port and open for exploration. It spends a lot of its time teaching sailing and is often out on the Lake.
Very little headroom below deck so the docent sat while telling about the ship |
About six miles of rope on the boat |
Black rope is used for the standing rigging and holds things that don't move. Brown rope moves things. |
Good display showing to power of cannon shell on wooden ships |
We learned a lot about ship cannons and how they were operated |
There is also a good display about the first steel hulled vessel on the Great Lakes |
Nice model of their museum and library in one building |
Nice to see the construction area for ship models in the museum |
Lots of beautiful artwork on display |
Enjoying the day! |
