Cleveland 2018

We spent a fun day in Cleveland checking out some interesting sites. All were related to shopping, mostly for food.

Heinens Grocery chain has put one of their stores into a historically significant bank in downtown Cleveland. We were told it was interesting from an architectural standpoint and that their food court was very well done. Both items proved to be true.

Just down the street is the historic Old Arcade, one of the first shopping malls in the country. It came about in the late 1800's and was a 'must see' of its time period. It was the ninth building ever put on the National Historic Register.

Lastly we stopped at the West Side Market. This is an extravaganza of food shops of all types under the roof of a well designed market place. It was dedicated in 1912 and has been a source for specialty foods for decades.

Today the market is home to over 100 vendors of great ethnic diversity. You can find not only fine meats and fresh vegetables, but also fresh seafood, baked goods, dairy and cheese products, and even fresh flowers. There are also booths that sell ready-to-eat foods, herbs, candy and nuts. Tourists from all over the world tour the market every year drawn by television programs produced by the Travel Channel and Food Network featuring segments on the West Side Market. Last year it is estimated that over a million people visited the market.

 Next is the Old Arcade

We saw this mural on the way back to the parking garage and thought it was striking
