We enjoy following the D&RGW out of service Tennessee Pass line thru Colorado. There is a section across the river from Highway 50 east of Salida, CO that includes a section of tunnel. It is across the river from the highway and it is not obvious how to cross the river to access the tunnel.
Google Earth is our friend in this case and by following the tracks along in Google Earth we were able to find a bridge to cross the river and drive almost next to the tunnel.

The typical black ballast rock is once again found |
The highway is across the river |
It is not a long tunnel |
Lots of debris, rock fall and vegetation block the trackage |
This is also along a portion of the river where gold exploration is allowed |
All in all a fun place to explore for an hour or so |
Glad it was fun. It is need a short tunnel! I had pictured a much longer tunnel. You two could have been Sherlock Holmes in another life. Betz
