Silverton Colorado has a great history museum. Part of it is the old jail which shows how prisoners were confined in times past. What makes this unique is the confinement portion of the jail was made of steel by outside companies and installed in the desired building. I thought jails were purpose built, but he jail "kit" allowed any building to become a jail.
Other parts of the museum cover mining history and techniques. These exhibits showcase everything from types of minerals to the methods of extracting them from the mountains and transporting them to the mills.
The cable systems that carried buckets of material over harsh terrain were documented very well. If you are modelling these structures this is a good place to get first hand information.
