Duluth Ore Carrier

Duluth Minnesota has ore carrier SS William A. Irwin museum ship on display.

This was a well preserved ship and the only one of the ore carriers we toured that offered a guide. We learned a lot. This ship has an interesting marketing approach around Halloween as the cargo holds are converted to a house of horrors. That would indeed be scary.

Once you purchase your ticket the tour starts on deck

These are the hatch cover clamps in both positions

Lots of stairs and ladders

Spare propeller blades were kept on deck.

Engine room was in very nice condition

Overhead vents in the engine room

Crew quarters

Galley with plate storage

Really big coffee pots

Grid work kept pots in place during ship movement

Dining area for corporate officials travelling onboard

Bridge and steering controls

This was an interesting placard

This image shows 'tunnels' that are built into the sides of the ship just under the main deck. These allowed the crew to move from the bow to the stern of the ship without gong outside. This was the first ship to have this feature. Prior to this innovation you hooked a clamp to a wire and traveled outside in all kinds of weather with the wire and clamp intended to keep you from blowing overboard.
