The shipwreck museum at Whitefish Point, Michigan has an exhibit dealing with the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The sinking happened just 17 miles away.
Divers raised the bell from the ship and replaced it with another bell engraved with the names of those who perished. This was a tribute to those who died, but more importantly, a means for the families of those to have a funeral of sorts and put their loved ones to rest.
