Iron Ore Museum

The Michigan Iron Industry Museum is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula very near where the first forge was located, thereby kicking off the development of the industry.

Several automobiles were on display and were intended to show how the iron ore turned into products.

The exhibits took you on a path thru the timeline of iron ore development

The magnetic properties of iron ore make doing surveys using a magnetic compass a challenge so special devices are needed. Solar compasses are used instead.

Once the high quality iron ore was exhausted a means had to be found to use the lower quality ore. The solution was taconite pellets.  Iron ore is pulverized, the iron taken out using magnets and mixed with other inert materials to make these tiny spheres that have a 65% iron ore content.
