Whitefish Bay

We enjoyed exploring Whitefish Point and the light station located there. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is also found there.

We found a new appreciation for the folks who manned this remote outpost.

Early Coast Guard rescue boats were shown

Equipment used for rescue from the beaches was on display

The Edmund Fitsgerald was trying to make Whitefish Bay and safety when it foundered just 17 miles away.

The bell was raised from the ship and replaced by one that has the names of the 29 who went down with her. Every year on the date of the sinking the bell is rung for each of the dead, usually by a member of each family.

This particular area of the lake is a graveyard for ships. This is but one example

Very popular site for raptor watching

The gift shop has rather interesting boats on display on the ceiling

  1. I suspect it was to protect the prey of raptors, but I don't know details.
