Silversides

Muskegon, Michigan built several submarines in their shipyards in WWII so it was no surprise to find they have a submarine on display as well as a nicely done submarine museum.

Additionally they have a retired Coast Guard cutter on display for tours.

The SILVERSIDES had very effective war patrols

This is one of only a few remaining hedgehog launchers on display. These projectiles were shot ahead of a surface ship and only exploded upon contact with the hunted submarine. They were considerably more efficient that depth charges.

These canisters stored ammo for the deck gun

Entry into the sub thru a cutout in the pressure vessel

Lots of coffee was available for the crews

They have a actual sound recording of these engines running. It is no wonder engine men left the service deaf

Aft Torpedo Room

We saw this floating platform and didn't know what it was for until we walked by later and saw this...

  1. We were trying to figure out what the different flags were painted on the ship (under "sunk"), aren't those both Japanese flags?
